Does translation mean word-by-word translation?
Talking about translation, one always wonders what conversion should be called as perfect translation. Which translation should be regarded as the true mirror image of actual document from source language to target language? Before proceeding further one should bear in mind that there are two types of translations. First is the contextual translation or idiomatic translation which means conveying the sense and crux of the original text and second is word-by-word translation in which every word is translated in terms of its literal meaning that’s why it is also called literal or direct translation. However, that should be kept in mind that in literal or word-by-word translation the true sense of the text may not be conveyed but the translation is grammatically correct. Just look at an example: If you literally translate the German word “Kindergarten” into English language it would be “Children Garden” but in English language the word “Kindergarten” refers to the p unique hoodia reschool education before first grade. If you are using software for translation services it is more than probable that the software uses word-by-word translation technique so the outcome doesn’t sound good and many times it doesn’t really convey the true sense of the original text. Translation thru software is sometimes also referred to as machine translation. The most famous online machine translation of our time is provided by Google translator which can translate over 50 languages. It gives you literal translation of content but it can provide you with idiomatic translation with proper grammar for simple sentences. Sometimes translation companies use machine translation for rough drafts and then it is perfected by professional human translators. However, sometimes translating in this way becomes much more annoying than translating manually. When a translation company refers to the word translation it is talking about idiomatic translation nine out of ten times.
